My favorite saying is a Chinese Curse, hah!
Monday, December 31st, 2007
May you live in interesting times.
Has been my favorite saying for many years now. I always thought of it as having a positive connotation. It described to me a feeling I always had about myself and how I wanted my life to be.
I was reading this article “The great fall of China” by Walter Russell Mead , which I do recommend if you have any interest in global economics and power. He ends the article with this line: “Maybe the old Chinese curse says it best: We seem to be headed for interesting times.”
Which led to the Wikipedia search and voila , such is the case!
And here’s to 2008, cheers! The image is from the wonderful NYPL Digital Gallery

Smoking Titles
Friday, December 21st, 2007
I quit smoking in October after smoking a pack a day for 23 years!
There’s some great usage of fonts in the opening sequence of the movie Thank You For Smoking , done by the very talented Shadowplay Studios . Click the animation above to go see the entire opening.

Firecracker Art!
Thursday, December 6th, 2007

I came across the Times of India Diwali greeting this year, over at Soumyadip’s blog .
I always loved the illustrations on these boxes, they are fairly similar to hindi movie posters, which I’ll add examples of at some point to the site. I’m sure some of these artists do both. But in a sexually repressed society, the population notwithstanding, there’s just something very sexual about all these lovely gals with their firecrackers, ahem.
Here’s the text on the image:
There is art.
There is Noise.
But only we have perfected the art of noise.
Some of the most original works of art can be found on cracker boxes. There is as much bang outside the box as there is within. From pictures of gods and celebrities to politicians and animals, they all find their pride of place on a cracker box. Whether it is Diwali, Dussehra, or winning a One-Day International, we celebrate all with the most beautiful sounds.
The Times of India
Celebration Times. Forever.
But being familiar with all these images of lovely gals, what really caught my eye in this collage was the Roman Legionnaire!

I wonder where he arrives from, probably ‘sourced’ from an Amar Chitra Katha comic by the firecracker guy.
